Basket Day in the Park 2024 (Registration Closed)

A gifted set of instructors are gathering for Basket Day 2024. They will be offering 4 different classes using natural and abundant materials, along with opportunities to learn about preparing cedar bark!

Learning options include:

 Learning to prepare your own cedar bark

 Weaving a basket with native blackberry vines

 Making a birch bark trinket canister

 Weaving a bark basket necklace

 Making an ivy basket

All classes will be held at Mary S. Young Park,* West Linn, Oregon.

Basket Day is a special class opportunity for members only, in which the Guild pays the class fee and students pay only the material fee. Participants will pay the material fee online at time of registration.

All classes are appropriate for all skill levels.

Bring your own: water bottle and snacks/lunch if needed. Class length: All classes are 3 hours. Cedar Preparation is available on a drop-in basis (10:00 am—2:00 pm). Each student may take a morning class and/or afternoon class.

Basket Day Bonuses: In addition to class offerings, the Guild library will be available as well as a treasure table of materials and tools left over from various projects and classes.

Cedar Prep is Back!

The cedar prep station will be available for several hours mid-morning to early afternoon during Basket Day in the Park. If you are new to getting cedar ready to weave, instruction and help will be available. Be sure to soak large pieces of cedar for a day or two until it is soft. Large soaking tubs will be available.

Tools and materials: There will be several Jerry stripper cutters in different sizes available for all.

Bring your own cedar to size and brown paper bags for the different sizes.

Date & Time: Drop-in, from 10:00 am—2:00 pm. Saturday, August 10, 2024, as part of Basket Day in the Park.

Cost: Free, and no registration required.


Not taking a class? If you are not interested in taking a class, you can still enjoy Basket Day—just bring a basketry project you’re working on and join the fun of weaving in a beautiful outdoor environment.

*Directions to Mary S. Young State Park, 19900 Willamette Drive (Hwy 43), West Linn, OR 97068. From the entrance, drive 0.5 mile, passing the ball field on your right and gravel parking lot on left; end at the paved parking area furthest east, the shelter is on the right. Look for CBBG signs.


Bark Basket Necklace with Rose Covert

Maximum number of students: 12

Description: Come make a gorgeous basket, and learn about and work with natural materials. In this class you will be working with willow bark, cedar bark, and cherry bark to create a small (2”-3” tall) basket. Students will be:

·      Using waxed linen to support the weaving and add color pops for those who want to use color.

·      Using the waxed linen to make cords that can be used to turn baskets into a necklace.

·      Working with twining and plaiting.

Tools students should bring to class: Scissors, large-eye needle, packing tool, spray bottle.

Birch Bark Trinket Canister with Sherrie Fairfield-Larson

Description: Explore working with birch bark. Students will create a small box, weaving bottom, sides, and top with artificial sinew.

Tools students should bring to class: Sharp scissors, ruler, small pliers to pull your needle through bark.

Learn to Make an Ivy Basket with Lise Gervais
$8.00

Date and time: 12:30 pm—3:30 pm PDT. Basket Day in the Park, Saturday, August 10, 2024.

Location: Mary S. Young Park

Material cost: $8 (paid online at registration)

Maximum number of students: 10

Direction: Enjoy making a basket from plants that are otherwise thought of as pests. Students will learn a very simple, single-strand weaving technique that is accessible for beginners. More experienced basket makers can use this technique to make many different shapes and sizes. Ivy can be used right out of the ground and doesn’t require processing to be usable.

Tools students should bring to class: Garden gloves if you have a pair you like. Some gloves will be available to borrow if you do not have a pair.

Basketmaking with Native Blackberry Vines, with Shara Anslow

Description: In this class students will prepare blackberry vines for weaving and weave a simple basket. Instructor will provide native blackberry vines for students to prep and weave, as well as leather pieces for stripping the thorns. Lily leaves (supplied) will be used as a base.

Tools students should bring to class: Leather gloves, packing tool, cutting tool
